Chaffwall is an interior material and paint to counter sick building syndrome
Advantages of Chaffwall
■Chaffwall consists entirely of natural materials (scallop shells and chaff) and does not contain substances that are harmful to humans.
■Chaffwall reduces the amount of chemical substances. It counters sick building syndrome. This wall material removes toxic chemical substances released into the air.
■Chaffwall is a deodorizing wall material. Removes odors from cigar smoke and pets, odors lingering after meals, and other odors peculiar to homes.
■Antibacterial. Chaffwall prevents the propagation of bacteria such as
Escherichia coli, mold, and ticks.
■Chaffwall absorbs and releases moisture well. Chaffwall absorbs and releases moisture better than wall materials made of polyvinyl chloride. Prevents condensation and serves as thermal insulation.

Calcium carbonate crystals shaped like columns are scattered all over the wall. These crystals have numerous functions.
Details regarding the development of Chaffwall
In 1996, we developed Chaffwall, which consists of crushed and baked scallop shells. Chaffwall can be used as an antibacterial and deodorizing wall material or paint. This wall material reduces the amount of formaldehyde and VOC released from interior and exterior building materials and other chemical substances released into a room. Spurred by an urgent need for countermeasures against sick building syndrome, Chaffwall has attracted attention in Japan and overseas. This wall material has been recommended by the Ministry of Construction as a new technology since December 24, 1999.
Chaffwall contains scallop shells as a main ingredient and reduces the amount of chemical substances in a home. This wall material consists mainly of unbaked and baked scallop shell powder and a natural adhesive; it does not release any chemical substances. Laboratory tests show that putting a specimen covered with Chaffwall in a chamber that contains formaldehyde gas reduces the concentration of formaldehyde by at least one-seventh in 7 minutes.
Aomori Prefecture is now taking steps to allow individuals building a house using this wall material to borrow extra money from the Housing Loan Corporation to promote eco-friendly houses. On the other hand, contaminants in hotel rooms in the U.S. are considered to be a cause of allergies and constitute a social problem. Hilton Hawaiian Village in Hawaii used Chaffwall on a trial basis and decided to use the scallop shell-based wall material in renovating another 5,000 rooms. Similar projects are under way for Marriott Hotels in the U.S. and Miyako Hotels. In Japan, Chaffwall has been used in houses and is also part of the National Bandai Youth Center and Aomori's prefectural office building, enjoying a good reputation.
